List of Prisoners of the CSS Atlanta,

Captured on June 17, 1863.

transcribed, with additional notes, by Terry Foenander.

The following list of Prisoners of War taken from aboard the CSS Atlanta, is transcribed from the list included on pages 267-268, volume 14 of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion. This particular list shows only 136 Prisoners of War from the vessel. At least two other naval dispatches in the same volume note that there were actually 165 personnel taken on June 17, 1863. One other official document shows the number as 145. I have attempted to locate the names of other personnel not shown on the ORN list, and these are included in a supplementary list shown at the end of the official list. The sources for these additional names are also included with each name.

Many of the Confederate sailors who served aboard the CSS Atlanta were from the state of Georgia, some of whom had previously served in the Confederate Army. This information is indicated where known. Additional information about service aboard other vessels of the Confederate States Navy is also shown, with the source of this information shown against each name. Additionally, some biographical information is also shown, where this is known.

Although all the officers of the vessel were confined for more than a year, all the enlisted men, as far as is known, were released within a few weeks of being captured. [See ORN 1, 14, 716 and 718.] They were sent, via Richmond, to Savannah, but a large number deserted en route, and at Savannah. [ORN 1, 14, 723.] The rest were sent aboard the CSS Georgia.
