INTRODUCTION.
In April 1867, the [Melbourne] ARGUS, commenced publishing the names of residents of, and visitors to, the town, who had passed away at the Melbourne Hospital during the previous month or two. These listings usually included the age, employment, nativity, year of arrival, vessel arrived in and the cause of death of the deceased, not always in that particular order. They also originally included the suburb of residence, where known. The majority of the persons listed were born abroad and it was the hope of the editor that inclusion of these details would assist persons overseas, and mainly in England, to locate missing relatives and friends. These listings continued for several years.
It is presumed that errors may have sometimes occurred when the information included on each individual was being recorded in the hospital registers and, as such, it is suggested that further details be checked through other official sources, namely, death certificates, passenger lists and other available records. Surnames have been transcribed exactly as recorded in the listings and some first names which were recorded in their shortened form, have been transcribed in full, for clarity.
The date of the newspaper listing of each entry is shown at the conclusion of the listing and is referenced by note numbers, shown at the end of each entry. Some entries have been listed in two or three subsequent newspaper listings, in which case all listings are noted at the end of the entry.
The Melbourne Hospital, in the 1860's, was located at the corner of Swanston and Lonsdale Streets. Construction of the hospital was begun in 1846 and two years later the first block had been completed. Up till 1871, it was the only general public hospital in the colony and served most of the needs of patients from Melbourne as well as the bush. In the early years it had a rather poor reputation amongst the settlers, and admittance to the hospital was considered as a death sentence. However, as the years passed, it's reputation gradually improved and with the construction of other public and private hospitals in the colony, the care of the sick and the elderly was shared evenly.
The names in this first part are transcribed from the ARGUS for the period April, 1867 to December, 1868. To return to the previous page, or for additional links by this author, please see the links at the bottom of this page.
