Part 2 - January, 1869 to December, 1870.
INTRODUCTION.
This second part covers the listings, transcribed from the Melbourne ARGUS for the period January, 1869 to December, 1870. There are a total of 728 names listed, although these would not include all the deaths at the hospital for that period. The names in this publication only include all non-natives of the colony, the majority of whom were from the British Isles. Some residents of Melbourne, who were born in other Australian states, are also included in this listing.
Once again, each name is cross-referenced by number to the actual date on which the details appeared in the ARGUS. The reference guide is included at the end of the list of names.
By the middle of 1869, the editor of the ARGUS had once again commenced including the actual date of death of each individual.
All details have been transcribed exactly as shown in the lists, including spelling errors which occur often, especially where medical terms are shown. I have included the year of death in brackets for clarity. A small number of entries only show the individual's surname, and gender can be determined, in some cases, through the details shown for that entry.
A large number of the deaths were attributed to phthisis, which is an obsolete term for tuberculosis, especially tuberculosis of the lungs, and for any disease characterized by weight loss and reduction in strength.
