DEATHS IN THE MELBOURNE HOSPITAL.

Part 3 - January, 1871 to December, 1872.

INTRODUCTION.

Part 3 covers the listings, transcribed from the Melbourne ARGUS, for the period January, 1871 to December, 1872. There are a total of 689 names listed, although these would not include all the deaths at the hospital for that period. The names in this list only include all non-natives of the colony. Some residents of Melbourne, who were born in other Australian states, are also included in this listing.

Each name is cross-referenced by number to the actual date on which the details appeared in the ARGUS. The reference guide is included at the end of the list of names.

All details have been transcribed exactly as shown in the lists, including spelling errors which occur often, especially where medical terms are shown. I have included the year of death in brackets for clarity. A small number of entries only show the individual's surname, and gender can be determined, in some cases, through the details shown for that entry.

In October, 1872, the editor of the ARGUS also commenced including monthly lists of deaths at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. A separate listing of these deaths will be uploaded at a later date.

On April 2, 1871 a census of the population of Victoria was taken with the following results:

Total Population of the colony - 731,528.

Males - 401,050.

Females - 330,478.

Birthplaces: Victoria - 329,597.

Other Australian

colonies & NZ - 28,669.

England - 164,287.

Wales - 6,614.

Scotland - 56,210.

Ireland - 100,468.

Other British

possessions - 3,870.

Continental Europe

& French colonies - 16,637 (of whom

8995 were from

Germany.)

As will be noted from the above statistics, a large number of the population of Victoria were born in the British Isles and this is reflected in the number of deaths at the hospital. Natives of numerous other nations are also represented in these lists. To return to the previous page, or for additional links by this author, please see the links at the bottom of this page.
