Pay Rates for Confederate Enlisted Sailors,

"CSS Alabama,"

November, 1862.

by Terry Foenander.

On Saturday, November 29, 1862, Captain Raphael Semmes gave authorisation to his paymaster, Clarence Randolph Yonge (who, two months later, was dismissed from the vessel), for an increase in the rates of pay for the enlisted men aboard the vessel. This pay rise had been discussed with the crew members, and agreed upon by all concerned.

The rates agreed upon are shown here, as copied from the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion, series 1, volume 1, page 808, with the appropriate exchange rate in Confederate and English currency:

The table is reproduced here as a guide for the Civil War Naval genealogist or researcher.
