Index of Nineteenth Century Photographic Portraits.
(In the Private Collection of the Author.)
Terry Foenander.
The following list of names are of identified photographic portraits (mainly cartes de visite) of the 19th century, in the collection of this author. The majority of these images are Australian, but there are a small number of English and American portraits included, as well. The images were collected over the last two decades or so, and were obtained from various sources, but mainly from antique dealers.
The identities are all inscribed on the reverse (in almost all cases) of the card image, and most of them are contemporary inscriptions. A small number of these inscriptions seem to have been added at a later stage but it is assumed in these instances, that the identification is correct. Some inscriptions also include the date of the image, and others, the age of the subject. Many of the photographs also include the photographers name and other details printed on the reverse, and, in some cases, on the front. These backmarks, as they are known, assist in identifying a time period when the image was taken. In these instances, reference can be made to, in the case of the Australian images with backmarks, a reference work titled THE MECHANICAL EYE IN AUSTRALIA, Photography 1841-1900, by Alan Davies and Peter Stanbury, which gives a listing of just about every photographer who operated in Australia, as well as the dates of their operations, and localities. Where possible I have made reference to this work to ascertain the time frame of the photograph, when that photograph includes the photographer's imprint.
Some of the names on the following list will include a link to a scanned image of the subject named, and at a later stage I hope to scan all the images listed here. Please note that images shown are not to be used elsewhere or for any other purpose, without the permission of the owner.
Details for each entry include, in sequential order, the name of the subject shown in the photograph, name and address of the photographer, where shown, and any additional details that have been inscribed on the reverse of the image. Where a name only is supplied, with the note "no additional data," then the image is without any photographer's imprint, or anything other than the inscribed name of the subject.
Other images from my collection have been donated to the Local History Library, in Toowoomba, and are not listed here.
