Eurasians in the

Singapore Volunteer Corps:

A Roster.

compiled by Terry Foenander.

This preliminary roster includes names of Eurasian personnel in the Singapore Volunteer Corps, extracted from several sources, and especially from information provided by Barry Pereira, of Singapore, Mary Anne Schooling, of Perth, Australia, Lionel de Rosario, of Sydney, Australia, and John Brown of the United Kingdom. Each entry includes name, rank, regimental number (where known), and the unit. Additional biographical information is also provided in some instances. A small number of Eurasians are also known to have served in the Royal Army Medical Corps, and, although their names are not on this list, it is hoped that a separate roster for these personnel will be compiled at a later stage.

The following details about the Corps were contributed by Mr. Lionel De Rosario, of Sydney, New South Wales, and obviously relates to the setup of the unit at the time of the Second World War:

The Straits Settlements Volunteer Force consisted of four battalions:

1st & 2nd Battalions were based in Singapore (Singapore Volunteer Corps).
3rd Battalion was based in Penang.
4th Battalion was based in Malacca.

Each battalion was made up of four companies, as follows:
1st Battalion:

A Company: manned by Englishmen.
B Company: manned by Europeans.
C Company: manned by Scottish.
D Company: manned by Eurasians.

2nd Battalion:

E Company: manned by Chinese.
F Company: manned by Malays.
G Company: manned by Eurasian heavy machine gunners.
Signals Unit: manned by Eurasians, Malays and Indians.

All members of A, B, C, D, E and F Companies were infantrymen and within each company there were light machine gunners. A few of the infantrymen were trained to use anti-tank guns.

SRA(V) - Singapore Royal Artillery (Volunteers) were mainly Europeans and Malays who manned the long range guns and searchlights at Pulau Blakang Mati (now called Sentosa).

All Volunteers who had been mobilised for active service during the War with Japan were awarded the following medals after the war:

1939-1945 Star.
Pacific Star
Defence Medal.
Victory Medal.

[Lionel De Rosario]

A number of the personnel are shown as having been struck off the strength of the Corps for "inefficient service." This obviously indicates that their attendance at parades and exercises was unsatisfactory.

Additional information will be added as it comes to hand.
