Confederate States Army to Navy Transfers.
by Terry Foenander.
Ellen Fulcher Cloud, a genealogist residing in North Carolina has been researching the life of her ancestor, Christopher O'Neal, who had seen service in the Confederate Army and Navy during the Civil War. During her research, Ellen was able to obtain, from the record groups of the National Archives, copies of three pages listing the names of a number of men from the Army of Northern Virginia who had transferred over to Naval service in April, 1864.
These lists include the names of seventy-five men in General Robert E. Lee's army, who were accepted into the service of the Confederate States Navy. They were transferred over, under the authority of Special Orders, numbers 89 and 92, dated April 16 and April 3, 1864, respectively (?), to take effect from April 3 and 4. These orders were issued by the Adjutant and Inspector General's Office, Richmond, Virginia. They indicated that the men were to report to naval commander, Frederick Chatard, at Orange Court House, for assignment to naval duty.
Additionally, in September, 2002, Linda Menikos contacted me with a further list of Army to Navy transfers, which she has kindly allowed me to include at this page. The names include that of her great grandfather, Francis Dooley, who had served in the 15th Texas Cavalry, but on August 22, 1863, was transferred to the Confederate States Navy. Linda has provided some additional genealogical information on Dooley, which she has obtained during her research at several resource centers.
Another researcher, Mr. Ed Milligan, of Alexandria, Virginia, also provided, by e-mail, dated February 2, 2005, several names for inclusion in this list, as transcribed from the Adjutant and Inspector General's Office, Special Order #66, of March 22, 1862, page xx, which included the names of ten personnel of the Guarde Lafayette (company A, 12th Alabama Volunteer Regiment), who transferred to the Navy. This list is on pages 246 and 247 of Chapter 1, volume 8, Record Group 109, at the National Archives. Contributions from this source are source cited as [Milligan.].
During the course of the war, the Confederate Navy was constantly demanding an increase in strength, but was never really able to achieve the numbers required. A large percentage of her personnel were obtained from the ranks of the Confederate Army. Some enlisted personnel from the Army were also commissioned as Confederate Navy officers.
Ellen and Linda have kindly provided me with copies of these lists, and have granted their permission for me to transcribe the names and place them on my site, as a further source of information for Civil War researchers. Ellen has a number of genealogical sites online, which include much data on North Carolina records.
The list of names of CS Army personnel who transferred over to the Navy, shown below, include their names (arranged in alphabetical order for ease of reference), regiments and Special Order number, as shown in the original copies. Any additional data shown has been extracted from the sources shown at the end of the list, and is referenced accordingly.
