(The majority of the information contained above was obtained from the publication LIST OF OFFICERS OF THE U.S. NAVY AND OF THE MARINE CORPS, 1775 - 1900, edited by Edward W. Callahan. Further information was also very courteously provided by USMC Civil War historian, David M. Sullivan, whose multi-volume history of the Corps in the Civil War , UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS IN THE CIVIL WAR is in the final stages of completion. This work is highly recommended for all Civil War enthusiasts. The OFFICIAL RECORDS OF THE UNION AND CONFEDERATE NAVIES IN THE WAR OF THE REBELLION was also the source of some information and this is referred to, in brackets in the textas ORN, followed by the Series, volume and page numbers. Finally, some details on the commandant of the Corps during most of the war, John Harris, were obtained from the Washington, D.C. newspaper, the Daily Morning Chronicle of Friday, May 13, 1864.)
