Complete Muster Roll of the Crew

of the U.S. Steamer "Juniata"

on 31 December, 1864.

Transcribed by Terry Foenander.

The USS Juniata was a steam sloop of war which was launched at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, March 20, 1862, and commissioned on December 4, 1862. Originally intended for service in the West Indies, she was temporarily assigned to the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron, and was stationed at Norfolk, Virginia, until April 26, 1863, when she departed for the West Indies. She remained at this station until the end of November, of that year, when she sailed for New York. Later returning to Philadelphia for repairs, the vessel remained there until returning to the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron, in August, 1864. At the end of the year she joined the large fleet that were engaged against Fort Fisher, off Wilmington, North Carolina, and also participated in the second, successful attack against the fort, in mid-January of 1865. She lost several men through death and injuries on both occasions. Later she was transferred to the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron, where she lost several more men in an accident, when one of her cutters capsized in Winyah Bay, South Carolina. She remained in South Carolina waters until after the close of the war.

The muster roll, as transcribed here, only includes the names of the enlisted sailors of the vessel, for the quarter ending December 31, 1864. Although there was a marine guard on the USS Juniata, none of their names are shown on this muster roll.
