Complete List or Muster Roll of the Crew of the United States steamer "Memphis"

On the 1st day of July, 1863.

transcribed and compiled by Terry Foenander.

The USS Memphis, the second vessel of this name in the United States Navy, was originally a blockade runner, captured by the USS Magnolia, while attempting to run the blockade from Charleston, South Carolina, with a cargo of cotton, on July 31, 1862.   She was commissioned into the United States Navy on October 4, 1862, with acting volunteer lieutenant Pendleton G. Watmough as her commander.   The 791 tonne screw steamer, with an armament of 7 guns, began service in the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron, off Charleston, and, almost immediately captured the British steamer Ouachita on October 14, 1862.   On January 4, 1863, she, in company with the USS Quaker City, captured the Confederate sloop Mercury, attempting to reach Nassau with a cargo of turpentine.   On January 31, 1863, the Confederate ironclads, CSS Palmetto State and CSS Chicora, made a bold attack upon the blockading vessels of the Union fleet, off Charleston, and, in the process, managed to do some damage to the USS Mercedita and the USS Keystone State.   The USS Memphis had to take the USS Keystone State in tow, at the end of the attack, after which the Confederate ironclads retired.

In March of 1864, the USS Memphis was operating in the North Edisto River, South Carolina, and, on the 6th of that same month, the vessel was attacked by the Confederate torpedo boat David, but, due to the Confederate attacker’s defective spar torpedoes, the Union gunboat escaped damage, and fired at the retreating torpedo boat.   The USS Memphis continued blockading duties until the end of the Civil War.   She was decommissioned on May 6, 1867.   [DANFS 4, 318.]

As was normal with muster rolls of United States Navy vessels during the Civil War, the muster roll of the USS Memphis only showed the details of the enlisted sailors.   Officers’ particulars were included on separate lists.

The muster roll of this date lists the names and details of 99 enlisted personnel.   The vast majority of them were American born, and are shown to have held various occupations before enlisting in the Naval service.   The youngest member of the crew, at the age of thirteen, was 3rd class boy, William H. Ellison, and the oldest was quartermaster John Taylor, aged sixty-seven.
