Muster Roll of the "USS New Ironsides"
April, 1863.
Transcribed and contributed by William H. Roberts.
The following muster roll of the enlisted crew members of the USS New Ironsides was transcribed, and contributed by Mr. William H. Roberts, of Columbus, Ohio (who can be contacted at e-mail address: whroberts at alum dot mit dot edu). It only includes the crew members on the vessel at the quarter ending April, 1863. Some additional data on a few of the crew members was obtained from other sources, a list of which is shown at the end of the roster.
Launched May 10, 1862, and commissioned at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, August 21, 1862, the USS New Ironsides was an ironclad steamer with a complement of over 440 men. She was assigned to the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron, and arrived off Charleston on January 17, 1863. In early April of that year, the New Ironsides, together with other ironclads of Admiral Du Pont's blockading fleet, attempted an unsuccessful attack upon the defenses of Charleston Harbor. In the following weeks she remained with the blockaders, protecting the wooden vessels of the Union fleet from an attack by Confederate vessels.
On the night of August 21, 1863, an attempt was made to destroy the Union ironclad, but this threat was averted when she beat to quarters. However, a second attempt, on the night of October 5, 1865, did manage to breach whatever defenses were in place, and a spar torpedo was exploded against the starboard quarter of the New Ironsides, though damage sustained was minimal. She continued on blockading duty for a few more months, and returned to Philadelphia for repairs, where she was decommissioned in June, 1864.
Recommissioned August 27, 1864, the ironclad joined the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron, and in December of that year joined in the first, unsuccessful attack against Fort Fisher, off Wilmington, North Carolina. A second attempt nearly three weeks later was successful, and, with the fall of Fort Fisher, the last major port of the Confederacy was closed, thus ensuring that her days were numbered. The USS New Ironsides spent the last few months of the war at Hampton Roads, and then returned to Philadelphia, where she was decommissioned at League Island, April 6, 1865. She was destroyed by fire in December of that year. [DANFS.]
