Lewis Peter Wiggins,

Signal Quartermaster,

CSS "Shenandoah."

Terry Foenander.

An affidavit completed at the end of the cruise of the CSS Shenandoah in December, 1865, at Liverpool, includes a list of the crew of the vessel during her final months prior to surrendering to the British authorities. Amongst the names on the list is one Lewis Wiggins, shown as signal quartermaster. Wiggins was born in Russia under his original surname of Wiegand, but changed his name after migrating to the west. His detailed biography was completed in the early 1970's by his grandson, Robert Culver, and appears on a separate page through the kind permission of his descendants. The photo of Wiggins shown here appears through the kind courtesy of Mr. Robert Culver, junior (son of the author of the manuscript), of Louisiana, and Mr. George Dudley, of Phenix City, Alabama, Wiggins' great, great, grandson. The date of the photograph is unknown, but shows him at about middle age, and may have been taken prior to the war when he was in his early 40's. The biography included on a separate page, in its original form, is a 30 page, typewritten manuscript, completed by Wiggins' grandson in 1972. I have taken the liberty of separating the lengthy document into several chapters, and have corrected some grammatical and spelling errors. However, there may be other errors which have been overlooked.

Please note that the manuscript is the original property of the Culver/Dudley families, and may not be reproduced, complete, or in parts, without their express permission.
